Three-years later and we’re not doing much better. But why are the numbers so huge? And, what is it about our lifestyle of today that’s encouraging their growth?

A new study, conducted by the University of Virginia found that we essentially live in a “snacking society.” Due to a number of factors, including the easy availability of food, their size compared to their calorific value (bitesize portions high in sugar and fat) and even when we’re eating, we’re the largest we’ve ever been. “The diet in the U.S. and other nations has changed dramatically in the last 50 years or so, with highly processed foods readily and cheaply available at any time of the day or night,” Ali Güler, a professor of biology at the University of Virginia, said. “Many of these foods are high in sugars, carbohydrates and calories, which makes for an unhealthy diet when consumed regularly over many years.”

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3943282228430444"
     data-ad-slot="5511153269"
     data-ad-format="auto"
     data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

Food has, over time, become more about the pleasure than the necessity. We want to enjoy (and take way too many pictures of) what we’re eating, rather than just using food to sustain ourselves. Güler and his colleagues demonstrate this by using mice who experienced pleasure from food and mice who did not. The mice who had their dopamine signalling disrupted maintained a healthy diet, eating only when necessary and avoiding snacking, whereas those who “enjoyed” their food were more inclined to snack. Basically, our brains are making us want to over-eat. Great. “We’ve shown that dopamine signaling in the brain governs circadian biology and leads to consumption of energy-dense foods between meals and during odd hours,” Güler said.

Additionally, electricity is also making us obese. Okay, hear me out on this one, according to Güler, “This lights-on-all-the-time, eat-at-any-time lifestyle recasts eating patterns and affects how the body utilizes energy,” he said. “It alters metabolism — as our study shows — and leads to obesity, which causes disease. We’re learning that when we eat is just as important as how much we eat. A calorie is not just a calorie. Calories consumed between meals or at odd hours become stored as fat, and that is the recipe for poor health.”

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3943282228430444"
     data-ad-slot="9258826580"
     data-ad-format="auto"
     data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

[ad_2]
Source link

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3943282228430444"
     data-ad-slot="2884989920"
     data-ad-format="auto"
     data-full-width-responsive="true"></ins>

[ad_1] In 2017, it was recorded that there were more people who were obese than underweight.
