The company says the goal is to create a \u201chigher standard\u201d of content for its ads and prohibit divisive rhetoric.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mash-embed-card\">\n<p><iframe allow=\"encrypted-media\" allowautoplay=\"\" allowtransparency=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fzuck%2Fposts%2F10112048980882521&amp;width=500\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"293\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" width=\"500\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cToday we&#8217;re prohibiting a wider category of hateful content in ads,\u201d said Zuckerberg. \u201cSpecifically, we&#8217;re expanding our ads policy to prohibit claims that people from a specific race, ethnicity, national origin, religious affiliation, caste, sexual orientation, gender identity or immigration status are a threat to the physical safety, health or survival of others.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Zuckerberg pointed out that Facebook has typically banned certain types of content from its ad platform that are normally allowed in regular posts. And that\u2019s the same case here.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If Facebook effectively enforces its own rules, you won&#8217;t see ads with hate speech on the platform, but may still see hateful posts in your News Feed. (For regular posts, Facebook only bans &#8220;direct&#8221; attacks \u2014 defined as &#8220;violent or dehumanizing speech, statements of inferiority, or calls for exclusion or segregation&#8221; \u2014 on protected groups.)<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time the company has \u201cexpanded\u201d its definition of hate. Last year, it reversed <a href=\"https:\/\/me.mashable.com\/tech\/3530\/facebook-finally-bans-white-nationalism-and-white-separatism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a> to allow white nationalist rhetoric.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Why did they allow it in the first place? According to Facebook, this will no longer be the case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven if a politician or government official says it, if we determine that content may lead to violence or deprive people of their right to vote, we will take that content down,\u201d said Zuckerberg. \u201cThere are no exceptions for politicians in any of the policies I&#8217;m announcing here today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to point out the reference Facebook\u2019s CEO is making there. Zuckerberg is <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/facebook-elections-political-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a> to another one of Facebook&#8217;s many controversies: allowing politicians to <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/facebook-political-ads-controls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a> in political ads.<\/p>\n<p>Quite frankly, its new hate speech policy is only as good as Facebook\u2019s desire to enforce it. Take the aforementioned white supremacy ban, for example. Far-right groups are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/6\/5\/21282062\/facebook-limit-spread-boogaloo-groups-extremist-anti-government-violence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><\/a> on Facebook\u2019s platform.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Facebook is feeling the heat. At the beginning of the month, the social media platform was hit with a wave of criticism for its <a href=\"https:\/\/me.mashable.com\/tech\/10563\/mark-zuckerberg-says-black-lives-matter-after-defending-trumps-posts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a> to not take action against Trump\u2019s inflammatory posts against Black Lives Matter protesters. Zuckerberg said the company was going to take a few weeks to review its policies surrounding content that could incite violence.<\/p>\n<p>Now, just weeks after Facebook was raked over the coals, it\u2019s facing a major advertiser boycott. Companies including <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/verizon-stops-buying-facebook-ads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Verizon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/me.mashable.com\/tech\/10793\/brand-leviathan-unilever-pulls-ads-from-facebook-cites-polarized-times\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Unilever<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/north-face-patagonia-rei-boycott-facebook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patagonia<\/a> have pledged to halt advertising over the spread of hateful posts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And to reiterate: Facebook banned hate speech in ads, but you might still see it in regular posts \u2014 unless the company decides they might incite violence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So, basically, Facebook will allow\u2026 non-violent hate speech? That seems to be splitting hairs.
