Companies operating within Hong Kong could also be required to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/tiktok-to-pull-out-of-hong-kong-e253eb02-69e9-4abb-a5c2-28ffa196a9a0.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><\/a>, or hand over user data to the Chinese government. We have never been asked by the Chinese government to remove any content and we would not do so if asked. Period,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.tiktok.com\/en-us\/statement-on-tiktoks-content-moderation-and-data-security-practices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">read TikTok&#8217;s statement.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are not influenced by any foreign government, including the Chinese government; TikTok does not operate in China, nor do we have any intention of doing so in the future.&#8221; (Though TikTok is owned by a Chinese company, the app is unavailable in mainland China.)<\/p>\n<p>With the implementation of the new national security laws, TikTok may have no choice but to withdraw if it wants to keep this resolve. Twitter and Facebook both recently stopped responding to data requests from Hong Kong authorities pending review of the laws and their implications.
