And yet, through all the <a href=\"https:\/\/me.mashable.com\/entertainment\/10651\/abc-announces-matt-james-as-the-first-black-bachelor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Neil Lane diamonds<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/me.mashable.com\/entertainment\/9326\/the-lessons-we-learned-from-love-is-blind-broken-down-by-couple\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pod-to-pod confessionals<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/me.mashable.com\/entertainment\/8629\/90-day-fiance-is-the-best-reality-show-on-tv-right-now\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">90-day test runs<\/a>, nothing has made me feel as invested and as good as fast as <em>Love on the Spectrum.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Debuting its first season globally today, Netflix\u2019s latest \u201cwill they, won\u2019t they\u201d gem follows a cast of autistic singles and couples as they navigate the unpredictable world of adult dating. The tone is similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/barcroftmedia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Truly<\/a> (formerly Barcroft TV) in that it blends staid narration with vibrant subjects, eschewing the pageantry and competitiveness of genre mainstays for a more traditional docuseries approach. There are no gimmicks, no stunts, no promises of drama or attempts to instigate it. Just a handful of people looking for love, like everyone else.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pull-quotes\">\n<p>This is a show about finding \u201cthe one\u201d \u2014 a task that\u2019s difficult, confusing, and highly personal for anyone who undertakes it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That most lonely hearts in this show have one or more disabilities is a thematic through-line <em>Love on the Spectrum <\/em>explores frequently and frankly. Still, this narrative doesn&#8217;t appear to be aimed at spouting platitudes or generalizations about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.understood.org\/en\/friends-feelings\/empowering-your-child\/building-on-strengths\/neurodiversity-what-you-need-to-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><\/a> individuals and their capacity for intimacy. Nor is it an exploitative spectacle, a misguided instance of <a data-mashable-story-id=\"5f180e900dc98f0aa1000006\" href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/2015\/07\/26\/disability-ally-inclusive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a>, or a chance for studios execs to pat themselves on the back.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>No, <a href=\"https:\/\/zdcs.link\/mxN1y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Love on the Spectrum<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>is all about uniqueness and individuality, focusing on the possibility of love for each of its characters as they appear and present onscreen. Though each participant is in their 20s, is autistic, and has at least some interest in a romantic relationship, the emphasis of this series isn\u2019t on the abstract idea of a group looking for avenues towards happily ever after, but on these specific people&#8217;s pursuits within their local communities. \u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"vplayer\"><iframe allowautoplay=\"\" data-channel=\"Netflix\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2MhREzn42bA\" data-template=\"embedded\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>During the series&#8217; five episodes, we meet people like Michael, a <em>Gilligan\u2019s Island<\/em>-loving, tell-it-how-it-is toy collector in search of the perfect woman; and Maddi, a tall, video game-obsessed joke machine who could take or leave the love thing altogether. Private moments are made especially intimate by certain cast members&#8217; willingness to be ferociously, unapologetically themselves. It&#8217;s an infectious blend of authenticity and fairy-tale idealism that captures everything about love we find so intriguing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Love on the Spectrum <\/em>is an affecting show that paints telling portraits of human connection that are so lovely, so moving, and so wholly satisfying, it&#8217;s hard to imagine reality dating being done any other way. Sure, I still want the rose ceremonies, pseudo-social experiments, and chaotic in-fighting in other franchises.
