That&#8217;s right, the Big Data company thinks we&#8217;re all in this for the long haul \u2014 at least in the U.S., anyway.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/google-to-keep-employees-home-until-summer-2021-amid-coronavirus-pandemic-11595854201\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a>, which quotes Pichai as framing the announcement as a way to grant his employees a modicum of certainty in otherwise uncertain times.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I know it hasn&#8217;t been easy,&#8221; the <em>Journal<\/em> reports him as writing to Google employees on Monday. &#8220;I hope this will offer the flexibility you need to balance work with taking care of yourselves and your loved ones over the next 12 months.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This new timeline for returning to in-office work \u2014 Google had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theinformation.com\/briefings\/2c1aa8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">previously said<\/a> its employees would work from home until the end of 2020 \u2014 suggests the company doesn&#8217;t have confidence in its ability to create a safe working environment mid-pandemic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The new work-from-home policy reportedly applies to the majority of Google&#8217;s 200,000 employees (including contractors) and is not limited to those based in the U.S. It also ups the pressure for other tech giants, such as Facebook and Apple, to follow suit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<!-- Quick Adsense WordPress Plugin: http:\/\/quickadsense.com\/ -->\n<div class=\"c5b541d88d911dcbb84397def1a3492d\" data-index=\"2\" style=\"float: none; margin:0px 0 0px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- 2 -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3943282228430444\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"5511153269\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/facebook-mark-zuckerberg-remote-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a May livestream<\/a>, Mark Zuckerberg announced that some of Facebook&#8217;s employees would be able to request to work from home permanently (and receive a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/05\/21\/zuckerberg-50percent-of-facebook-employees-could-be-working-remotely.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">corresponding pay cut<\/a> to &#8220;adjust salary to your location&#8221;). However, Google&#8217;s announcement is significantly more broad in that it applies to almost all of its workers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEE ALSO: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/me.mashable.com\/tech\/11000\/coronavirus-exposure-soars-at-teslas-fremont-plant-leak-shows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Coronavirus &#8216;exposure&#8217; soars at Tesla&#8217;s Fremont plant, leak shows<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Apple, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-07-13\/apple-asks-retail-staff-to-work-remotely-as-stores-shut-again\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports Bloomberg<\/a>, told employees last month that it does &#8220;not anticipate a full return before the end of the year&#8221; for workers based in the U.S. Twitter already said screw it, and told many of its employees they could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/news\/twitter-makes-working-from-home-a-permanent-option-for-some-employees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">work remotely forever<\/a>.
