Oops!<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the company said that the email and phone numbers uploaded by some Twitter users for <a data-mashable-topic=\"two-factor-authentication\" href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/category\/two-factor-authentication\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two-factor authentication<\/a> had somehow ended up in its Tailored Audiences and Partner Audiences advertising systems.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What does that mean, exactly? Well, let&#8217;s let Twitter explain.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When an advertiser uploaded their marketing list, we may have matched people on Twitter to their list based on the email or phone number the Twitter account holder provided for safety and security purposes,&#8221; explains the company&#8217;s blog post.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This, dear reader, is not good. Exploiting a security feature \u2014 even unintentionally \u2014 to target people with ads is bound to erode users&#8217; trust in said security feature.
