Warren&#8217;s campaign paid for the sponsored ads to appear on timelines of Facebook users in hopes that the ads would call attention to the fact that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2019\/10\/10\/facebook-policy-political-speech-lets-politicians-lie-ads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook allows politicians to blatantly lie in promotional material<\/a> that then gets shared across the platform.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Breaking news: Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook just endorsed Donald Trump for re-election,&#8221; Warren&#8217;s ad reads. &#8220;You&#8217;re probably shocked, and you might be thinking, &#8216;how could this possibly be true?&#8217; Well, it&#8217;s not. (Sorry.) But what Zuckerberg *has* done is given Donald Trump free rein to lie on his platform \u2014 and then to pay Facebook gobs of money to push out their lies to American voters.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"twitter-wrapper sort-rerender\">\n<div>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">We intentionally made a Facebook ad with false claims and submitted it to Facebook\u2019s ad platform to see if it\u2019d be approved. It got approved quickly and the ad is now running on Facebook. But Facebook just cashes Trump&#8217;s checks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Facebook already helped elect Donald Trump once. Now, they&#8217;re deliberately allowing a candidate to intentionally lie to the American people. And they\u2019re using their size and power to make it harder for the next tech entrepreneur with the next big idea to break through and compete with them \u2014 meaning less options for us,&#8221; the website reads.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook responded indirectly to Warren&#8217;s point with a Saturday evening tweet from the Facebook Newsroom account. Many respondents to the quickly ratio&#8217;ed tweet weren&#8217;t buying the company&#8217;s stance that Facebook is basically the same as the FCC when it comes to political ads.<\/p>\n<div class=\"twitter-wrapper sort-rerender\">\n<div>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ewarren?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@ewarren<\/a> looks like broadcast stations across the country have aired this ad nearly 1,000 times, as required by law. FCC doesn\u2019t want broadcast companies censoring candidates\u2019 speech. And does that still suck for us? Yeah. I mean, I don\u2019t want to have a major lawsuit against our own government. I mean, that\u2019s not the position that you want to be in when you\u2019re, you know, I mean \u2026 it\u2019s like, we care about our country and want to work with our government and do good things. But look, at the end of the day, if someone\u2019s going to try to threaten something that existential, you go to the mat and you fight.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Democratic candidate responded to Zuckerbeg&#8217;s comments by <a href=\"https:\/\/elizabethwarren.com\/plans\/break-up-big-tech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reiterating her plan<\/a> to diminish Big Tech&#8217;s control.<\/p>\n<div class=\"twitter-wrapper sort-rerender\">\n<div>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">What would really \u201csuck\u201d is if we don\u2019t fix a corrupt system that lets giant companies like Facebook engage in illegal anticompetitive practices, stomp on consumer privacy rights, and repeatedly fumble their responsibility to protect our democracy. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rI0v55KKAi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/t.co\/rI0v55KKAi<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elizabeth Warren (@ewarren) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ewarren\/status\/1179023352742236160?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">October 1, 2019<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Warren isn&#8217;t the only 2020 candidate to express concern over Facebook. On Friday, Amy Klobuchar <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amyklobuchar\/status\/1182523990696267777\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tweeted<\/a> about the platform&#8217;s need for &#8220;truth standard,&#8221; and Joe Biden&#8217;s campaign also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-election-facebook\/biden-campaign-asks-facebook-twitter-and-google-to-take-down-trump-ad-idUSKBN1WQ2AS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">asked Facebook<\/a> to take down a Trump ad that contained false claims. But the fact that Warren did so in such a unique and direct way is impressive.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Facebook spokesperson Andy Stone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/10\/11\/politics\/elizabeth-warren-facebook-ad\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a> CNN that the company believes political speech should be protected, which is why their ad policy allows politicians to speak so freely.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If Senator Warren wants to say things she knows to be untrue, we believe Facebook should not be in the position of censoring that speech,&#8221; Stone said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s all well and good in this case, because Warren is clearly admitting she&#8217;s spreading false information to illustrate a larger concern. But the real issue arises if a politician were to say something they know to be untrue <em>without<\/em> acknowledging it, so as to secretly and intentionally misinform the public. Trump, for instance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2019\/10\/10\/facebook-policy-political-speech-lets-politicians-lie-ads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">spends a huge chunk of change on Facebook ads<\/a>, and several of his ads have been criticized for containing lies.<\/p>\n<p>Some may find Warren&#8217;s ad controversial because it includes &#8220;fake news&#8221; that people might not read in full, but others see it as a masterful and successful attempt at using Facebook&#8217;s own platform to highlight this very real problem that exists.<\/p>\n<div class=\"twitter-wrapper sort-rerender\">\n<div>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Warren\u2019s campaign is clever.
