Soon, the same might be true for U.S. companies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-china-huawei-tech-exclusive\/exclusive-trump-expected-to-sign-order-paving-way-for-u-s-telecoms-ban-on-huawei-idUSKCN1SK2P1?il=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reuters<\/a> report Wednesday, president Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order that would bar U.S. companies from using telecommunications equipment made by companies which pose a national security risk. This would pave the way for an effective ban for companies on doing business with Huawei, and potentially other Chinese companies such as ZTE.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"see-also\">\n<p class=\"see-also-link\">SEE ALSO: <a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/huawei-smartphone-sales-50-percent-growth-apple-samsung-declined?utm_cid=a-seealso\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">There&#8217;s no stopping Huawei&#8217;s smartphone growth<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The report, which cites three unnamed U.S. officials familiar with the matter, says the order has been under consideration for more than a year, but has been delayed several times \u2014 and it may get delayed again.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And while the order reportedly won&#8217;t name any specific countries and companies, it&#8217;s tailored towards Huawei, which the U.S. government deems to be a <a data-mashable-story-id=\"5cdbc78c9111ae6578000027\" href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/2018\/02\/14\/nsa-fbi-cia-huawei\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spy threat<\/a> (and which Huawei has vehemently <a href=\"https:\/\/me.mashable.com\/tech\/2779\/huawei-to-us-media-dont-believe-everything-you-hear\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">denied<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. started a soft ban on Huawei equipment around December 2017, when a group of U.S. lawmakers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/01\/09\/business\/att-huawei-mate-smartphone.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sent a letter<\/a> warning about Huawei&#8217;s role in Chinese &#8220;espionage.&#8221; In January 2018, U.S. carriers <a data-mashable-story-id=\"5cdbc78c9111ae6578000027\" href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/2018\/01\/09\/huawei-mate-10-us-launch-no-wireless-carrier-ces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shunned<\/a> Huawei&#8217;s newly-launched flagship, the Mate 10 Pro. And in August 2018, president Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/ndaa-zte-huawei-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed<\/a> an executive order banning U.S. government agencies from purchasing or using telecommunications equipment from certain Chinese technology companies, including ZTE and Huawei. In December, Huawei CFO Wanzhou Meng was <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/huawei-cfo-arrested-iran-sanctions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrested<\/a> in Canada on suspicion of violating U.S. sanctions concerning Iran. And the U.S. has been trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/me.mashable.com\/tech\/3068\/the-us-threatens-germany-with-decreased-intelligence-sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coax<\/a> other countries to avoid using Huawei&#8217;s 5G equipment, with <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/huawei-australian-5g-network\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2018\/nov\/28\/new-zealand-blocks-huawei-5g-equipment-on-security-concerns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Zealand<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2018\/12\/10\/business\/japan-sets-policy-will-block-huawei-zte-public-procurement-april\/#.XImX-RNKj6A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Japan<\/a> following suit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<!-- Quick Adsense WordPress Plugin: http:\/\/quickadsense.com\/ -->\n<div class=\"c5b541d88d911dcbb84397def1a3492d\" data-index=\"2\" style=\"float: none; margin:0px 0 0px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- 2 -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3943282228430444\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"5511153269\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>The new order, if enacted, won&#8217;t change much for big wireless carriers, which aren&#8217;t using Huawei equipment, Reuters says. But it will affect small, rural carriers, some 25 percent of which use either Huawei or ZTE equipment in their networks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The order would also further intensify the trade war between China and the U.S., which has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/05\/09\/us\/politics\/china-trade-tariffs.html?module=inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">heating up<\/a> in recent days.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Huawei continues trying to clear its name, especially in countries which have been reluctant to impose a ban, including <a href=\"https:\/\/me.mashable.com\/tech\/3068\/the-us-threatens-germany-with-decreased-intelligence-sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Germany<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/me.mashable.com\/tech\/2437\/uk-cybersecurity-center-isnt-too-afraid-of-huawei-report-say\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UK<\/a>.
