{"id":99286,"date":"2019-11-27T13:10:27","date_gmt":"2019-11-27T13:10:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsforher.com\/?p=99286"},"modified":"2019-11-27T13:10:28","modified_gmt":"2019-11-27T13:10:28","slug":"hacker-steals-49-million-worth-of-cryptocurrency-from-upbit-exchange","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsforher.com\/?p=99286","title":{"rendered":"Hacker steals $49 million worth of cryptocurrency from Upbit exchange"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<!-- Quick Adsense WordPress Plugin: http:\/\/quickadsense.com\/ -->\n<div class=\"c5b541d88d911dcbb84397def1a3492d\" data-index=\"1\" style=\"float: none; margin:0px 0 0px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- m -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3943282228430444\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"5751019935\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p> [ad_1]\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"id_text\">\n<p>Korean cryptocurrency exchange Upbit has <a href=\"https:\/\/upbit.com\/service_center\/notice?id=1085\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">confirmed<\/a> the theft of 342,000 ether (the currency of Ethereum) early on Wednesday, worth about $49 million at the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lee Seok-woo, the CEO of Upbit&#8217;s parent company, broke the news in a <a href=\"https:\/\/upbit.com\/service_center\/notice?id=1085\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blog post<\/a>, saying an unknown hacker transferred the ether from Upbit&#8217;s wallet to his wallet at around 1pm Nov. 27 local time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In reaction to the theft, Upbit halted all deposits and withdrawals for &#8220;at least two weeks.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the post, Upbit will cover the damages with its own assets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re interested in seeing how the hacker moved $49 million in a single move and paid the low, low fee of about $3 to do it, the actual transaction is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/crypto-exchange-upbit-confirms-theft-of-49m-in-ether\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There have been other suspicious transactions coming out of Upbit today, as noted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/crypto-exchange-upbit-confirms-theft-of-49m-in-ether\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CoinDesk<\/a>. Earlier this year, hackers stole <a href=\"https:\/\/me.mashable.com\/tech\/4744\/major-crypto-exchange-hack-nets-40-million-and-could-get-so-much-worse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$40 million<\/a> worth of crypto from Binance, <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/cryptocurrency-exchange-bitpoint-hacked\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$32 million<\/a> from Bitpoint, and <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/bitrue-hacked\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$4.2 million<\/a> from Bitrue, to name just a few incidents.
